What Lokal collects, and what it doesn't.

The short version

We don't have user accounts. We don't store your translation history on our servers. The text you translate is sent to a third-party AI provider for the duration of the request and is not retained by us afterward.

What stays on your device

• Search history — stored in chrome.storage.local on the browser you installed Lokal into. Never sent to us.
• Favorites — same.
• Settings (theme, language preferences, toggles) — same.
• Install ID — a random anonymous identifier generated on first run, used to attribute your daily AI quota. Reinstalling resets it.

What our backend sees

When you trigger a translation, Lokal sends a request to locals-api.noras.tech containing:

• The text to translate
• The source and target language codes
• Your install ID (anonymous, see above)
• Your IP address (transient — used only for rate limiting)

The translated result is returned and discarded by us. We do not log the text of your translations.

Third parties

To produce a translation we forward the request to one of:

• OpenRouter (LLM router) for AI translations. Their policy .
• DeepL or Google Translate for Fast (non-AI) translations.
• Polar for Pro subscription billing — only when you upgrade. They receive whatever you give them at checkout (email, payment method); we receive only the resulting license key. Their policy .
• Cloudflare sits in front of our domains and may briefly process your IP and request metadata for security and routing.

What we don't do

• No analytics scripts on the extension or this site.
• No advertising, no ad networks.
• No selling or sharing of your data.
• No tracking across other sites.
• No user accounts (today).

Your rights

Because nothing personally identifying lives on our servers, there's nothing for us to delete on request. To wipe local data, uninstall the extension or clear its storage from your browser's extension settings. To cancel Pro, use the Polar customer portal; we'll forget your license key on next sync.
